Socorro Wants to Secede . . .
SOCORRO Because this community
has never been given recognition
to which it feels it is entitled in
connection with the original A-Bomb
blast, community leaders have voted
to set up the Socorro Free State, an
independent republic, and are asking
that it be recognized as such by the
United States and the United Nations.
Although the first A-Bomb test took
place only 30 miles from Socorro, all
the news of the event was date-lined
at Alamogordo which was 70 miles
away. Socorro has erected a monument
dedicated to the bomb blast. The
chamber of commerce has received a
letter from Tom Peesaw, secretary of
the Pan-American League of Indian
Tribes, stating that since his, tribe does
not like the way the United States is
being run, the Indians want to buy
land and move to the new "Free

Wilson Rattlesnakes

I just got around to reading Fred Rynerson's "Exploring and Mining Gems & Gold in the West", and early in the book he mentions that while he was working the tourmaline mines in the Aguanga Mountains, just west of Warner Ranch, they had to be on the look-out for a small rattlesnake, maybe eighteen inches long, 'light gray in color', that would crawl up into brush, 'probably to catch birds'. This would have been around 1905. He was later told the snakes were called Wilson Rattlesnakes. I've never heard of anything like this before. Comments? Insights?

has a lot of information on history and legends in the Southwest -- but there are thousands of unknown stories that we look forward to reading about here.

For example: The Wilbanks Family Story -- Historical true tale of life in the Kofa's in the early 1900's. Given to use by relatives of the original Wilbanks.
The ghost tales revolving around the Valecito Stage Station in Southern Caifornia, presented here by Dave Taylor.

Want to add another tale or historical item, then this is the place to do it.

--so what do you do? It's 110 degrees and you can't walk out, you have water, but no food -- answer buy Heater Meals for about $6.00 a meal and keep them in your vehicle for emergencies. Here's an example ---- we tried them on a trip. They do get really hot! Don't put them on your vehicle -- like we did!

They're BACK!

and here's one of them! Isn't it nice to know that they're still with us -- I mean this seriously. These are definitely pretty animals. Take a close look a the eyes, tongue, and face on this guy.

They have no doubt been here for a while now with the warm weather, but I thought it was nice to be able to spot one and take his picture.

Death Valley Scotty Flies

I continue to obsessively read the Desert Magazine back issues. This month, I read all the July Issues from 1939 on. I'm up to July 1953. Here's two things from that issue that caught my eye:

First, in the Letters to the Editor, Page 25

Y e s , S c o t t y ' s 8 1 ! . . .
Buffalo, New York
Desert:
My wife and I recently took a trip
to the West. While in Death Valley,
we stopped off at Scotty's Castle and
met Scotty. He claimed he was 81
years old.
Is this the real Scotty, or someone
posing as Scotty? He doesn't look to
be 81 years of age, and it has been
on my mind that he is posing and
telling this story for publicity sake.

Death Valley Scotty is still living,
and is 81, as he says. He is not well,
and his time is divided between the
Castle and the Las Vegas hospital.
If you were at the Castle, I presume
you met the real Walter Scott
rather heavy and somewhat crippled
by a foot ailment. His eyes are
bright, his complexion ruddy, and
his mind remarkably clear for his

Then, Page 29, in Here and There On the Desert:

Scotty Plans Plane Ride . . .
LOS ANGELESAccording to a
letter received by Sheriff Biscailuz of
Los Angeles County, Death Valley
Scotty is planning to make one more
trip to Los Angeles, "and this time I
am going to fly." The letter was in
response to an invitation to be present
at the annual peace officers' rodeo in
August. Scotty wrote:
"Dear Sheriff. Barring the acts of
God I will be there. This time I'm
going to fly.
"It used to take me and my mules
seven days to get across this desert to
Mojave or Barstow and grab a train
into Los Angeles, but this time I'm
gonna fly it in an hour. It will be my
first plane ride."Salt Lake Tribune.

Cow Protection League

This was in the July 1981 Cactus Clarion. I had to share:

Reno, Nev.A survey by the United States Department of Agriculture revealed that there are approximately 100 million head of cattle in this country at any given time. Another recent survey, by the United States Habadashers Association, revealed that there are more than 200 million cowboy hats sold in America each year. As everyone knows, the principal responsibility and duty of a cowboy is to boss cattle around. That was all well and good back in the days when the cattle outnumbered the cowboys. Now that nine out of 10 people in America are cowboys, the impact on cattle herds is devastating. With two or three cowboys bossing around each individual cow, the poor animals become confused and disoriented. They get depressed, lose weight and, in general, become stringy and tough. The newly formed Cow Protection League is introducing laws in several state legislatures which would require that anyone posing in advertisements for any product whatsoever (from cologne to automobiles to designer jeans) while wearing a cowboy hat must personally own at least three head of cattle. Additionally, all male models appearing in western wear must have dipped snuff or chewed tobacco for a full 60 days before the advertisement or commercial is photographed or filmed. Finally, the Cow Protection League is seeking a constitutional amendment which would make it a federal offense for anyone to harass or nag a cow which he did not personally own or had not been paid to pester. Should these measures prove effective, the nation might look forward to healthier, less neurotic cows and see a decline in the number of people wearing cowboy hats, thus finding it easier to watch movies in crowded theaters.
